Description:The Hydrographic Airborne Laser Sounder (HALS) system currently under construction for the Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) incorporates logarithmic amplification for dynamic range compression and a first-difference processing circuit to reduce the volume scattering signal prior to the arrival of the bottom return. These non-linear signal processing steps distort the input waveforms and lead to depth measurement biases whose magnitudes depend on signal strengths, pulse location algorithms, and algorithm parameters.
