Description:The establishment of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center Honolulu Laboratory of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in 1948 as the Pacific Oceanic Fishery Investigations (POFI) was authorized by the 80th Congress under Public Law 329. In 1958, with the passage of the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956, POFI became the Hawaii Area of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (BCF) within the U.S. Department of the Interior. When the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was created in the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1970, BCF became what it is today NMFS. The Honolulu Laboratory (HL) is one of four research laboratories in the Southwest Fisheries Center (SWFC). The other SWFC laboratories are the La Jolla Laboratory, which also serves a6 the center headquarters, and the Pacific Environmental Group in Monterey, and the Tiburon Laboratory. In addition to the SWFC, NMFS is composed of the Northwest and Alaska, the Northeast, and the Southeast Fisheries Centers, including 22 laboratories and facilities within the coastal borders of the United States.
