Description:This is the first of several reports being produced as a result of the Seattle Data Workshop which the Standing Scientific Committee convened in December 1978. In a form suitable for detailed population studies, the Commission assembles here in one document much of the data collected from the exploited fur seal stocks on the Pribilof Islands, Commander Islands, and Robben Island since the 1957 Convention went into force. Also included are earlier land data which in some cases were collected near the time of the 1911 Convention. Explanations of collection procedures and chronological summaries of pertinent management actions serve to emphasize the importance of using each data set in population studies within the limitations of its origin. Information is given on the daily commercial kills of males and females, incidental and research kills of females (on the Commander Islands and Robben Island only), rookery-specific counts and estimates of pups and adult males, causes of pup mortality on land, and the entanglement of fur seals during recent years in commercial fishing nets and other debris. Scheduled for future Commission reports are summaries of pelagic research data from both sides of the Pacific Ocean and of the voluminous tagging/marking and recovery/sighting records.
