Description:

The status of the golden tilefish stock in the South Atlantic was updated in April 2016 with data through 2014 (SEDAR 25 Update 2016). The update indicated the golden tilefish stock is undergoing overfishing but is not overfished. On January 3, 2017, NMFS sent a letter informing the Council that the golden tilefish stock is undergoing overfishing and that management action is necessary to end overfishing (Appendix B). See Section 3.2.3 and Appendix C for more information on the golden tilefish stock status. Purpose for Action Reduce the harvest of golden tilefish while the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council explores long-term options to end overfishing and rebuild the stock. Need for Action Reduce overfishing of golden tilefish, while minimizing to the extent practicable, adverse socio-economic effects and achieve optimum yield on a continuing basis as per the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
