Description:We are ship builders. Someone needs to be. New Jersey boasts 130 miles of Atlantic coastline and 1800 miles of tidal shore. That is not a misprint: New Jersey is that connected to the sea. Our core mission – research, education, and outreach – has been our hallmark since 1969. Few would contest that it is more compelling now than at any time in our history. Our State and its relationship with the ocean is changing at a rate faster than ever recorded. Global sea levels rose 3 inches from the 10th through the 15th centuries. Contrast that with the past 100 years when sea levels rose an astounding 5.5 inches. Don’t look now, but the relentless rise of the sea continues. And it’s picking up the pace.
