Description:As sea ice diminishes due to global climate change, the Arctic has seen an increase in shipping. This trend is expected to continue, opening once-unpassable areas to new routes, increasing vessel traffic, and expanding the shipping window with longer ice-free periods. The Arctic provides shipping operators a more direct route, which can provide a reduction in shipping time as well as fuel cost savings. Along with added shipping emissions, potential oil discharge and spills, introduction of invasive species, and the disruption of migratory patterns, anthropogenic noise produced by shipping has been identified by the Arctic Council as a major concern. This bibliography focuses on the Arctic and anthropogenic noise due to marine shipping. It is organized into four sections including: Arctic Soundscapes, Vessel Noise Measurement, Impact on Marine Life, and the Reduction and Management of Noise Levels.
