Description:This report must be considered provisional in that the material presented is not necessarily exhaustive nor has it been reviewed by others, within and without NMFS, who have an interest in or a responsibility for the eastern Bering Sea king crab resource. In our view the 3 S management system raises four obvious questions --two of which a-re biological, another essentially economic but associated with a technical question, and the fourth, political. We have addressed ourselves to the biological questions but have briefly commented on the others mostly because the total NMFS responsibility for eastern Bering Sea king crab goes beyond pure biological and management considerations. In fact, although we have responded in very recent months to questions relevant to management, NWFC is not directly involved in the management of the U.S. fishery on this resource.
