Description:On November 18, 2005, NOAA Fisheries listed the Southern Resident killer whale Distinct Population Segment (DPS) as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and a proposal to designate critical habitat was published on June 15, 2006. The ESA requires that critical habitat must be designated for listed species, with public notice and an opportunity for comment.
