Description:On December 3, 1998, the Office of Protected Resources of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issued a Biological Opinion on three federal actions proposed for 1999 to 2002. The actions were authorization of the Atka mackerel fishery of Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands, authorization of the pollock fishery of the same region, and authorization of the pollock fishery of the Gulf of Alaska. The Opinion evaluated the best scientific data available to determine if (1) the proposed fisheries could reasonably be expected to appreciably reduce the likelihood survival and recovery of the western population of Steller sea lions in the wild by reducing their reproduction, numbers, or distribution or (2) the proposed fisheries could reasonably be expected the appreciably diminish the value of critical habitat for the survival and recovery of Steller sea lions.
