Description:In FY 2009, the sale of domestically caught fish and shellfish by the commercial fishing industry was approximately $4.0 billion, making the U.S. the fifth-largest producer of seafood in the world. Each year, NMFS observer programs provide the high quality biological information necessary to managing the nation’s fisheries. These data are utilized by NMFS scientists and fisheries managers carrying out conservation and management activities such as fish and protected species stock assessments, quota monitoring, and development of bycatch reduction measures.
