Description:"This status review is in response to a petition1 to list 81 species as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Under the ESA, if a petition is found to present substantial scientific or commercial information that the petitioned action may be warranted, a status review shall be promptly commenced (16 U.S.C. 1533(b)(3)(A)). The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) decided that the petition had sufficient merit for consideration and that a status review was warranted for 27 of the 81 species (see http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/petition81.htm for the Federal Register notices), including the African coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae. The ESA stipulates that listing determinations should be made on the basis of the best scientific and commercial information available. The following status review interprets the best available information available on the species, and is used to evaluate its status in the context of consideration for ESA listing.
