Description:"This report was produced in response to a petition received from WildEarth Guardians on July 15, 2013, to list 81 marine species or populations as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Five of the petitioned species or populations were marine mammals. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) evaluated the petition to determine whether the petitioner provided substantial information as required by the ESA to list these marine mammals. On February 21, 2014, NMFS announced in the Federal Register that the petition did present substantial information that listing may be warranted for Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori); and NMFS requested information on this species from the public (79 FR 9880). Subsequently, NMFS initiated a status review of this species, which is documented in this report. This draft report summarizes available data and information on Hector's dolphins and presents an evaluation of the status and extinction risk of its component subspecies, the Maui dolphin (C. hectori maui) and the South Island Hector's dolphin (C. hectori hectori)."--Executive Summary.
