Description:"The marine environment in the Arctic is changing rapidly. Continued expansion of the duration and extent of seasonal ice-free waters is projected to occur over the coming decades, resulting in new opportunities for the utilization of marine resources and increased availability of technically navigable waters. This, in turn, is projected to bring increased levels of maritime activity to the region. It is believed that this increased vessel activity will lead to the degradation of Arctic marine ecosystems, adversely impacting fish and marine mammal populations, as well as the region's indigenous people. While many studies have advanced the idea of increased Arctic vessel activity and the potential impacts, little to no effort has been undertaken to provide a comprehensive baseline of vessel operations in the region to monitor trends"--Executive Summary (page 1).
