Description:"Two Maui community groups, Polanui Hiu and Kīpahulu 'Ohana, have invited the State of Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) to designate their nearshore waters as Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Areas (CBSFA) in order to protect their subsistence fisheries. Through the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) supported these groups as they conducted targeted outreach to reach out to a range of stakeholders, including residents, state government officials and potential opposition, in order to secure strong and broad support for CBSFA proposals. TNC also assisted with the development of t-shirts and printed materials for Kīpahulu 'Ohana to support their outreach efforts (see Figures 1-7). Polanui Hiu seeks to manage 0.8 miles of coastline in Lahaina, while Kīpahulu 'Ohana looks to designate the span of Kīpahulu moku (land district), encompassing 4.5 miles of coastline. Both communities exemplify the traditional customs and livelihood that the CBSFA designation seeks to protect"--Page 2.
