Description:"Prior to 1772, the San Luis Obispo area was inhabited by Chumash Indians. Europeans had visited the area as early as 1542, but it was not until 1 September 1772 that Father Serra, a Catholic missionary, founded Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The settlement became part of Mexico at the time of the revolution in 1822. Then, on 18 February 1850, the county of San Luis Obispo became one of the original counties in the State of California"--Introduction.
