Description:It has only been in the past ten years that the American seafood industry has begun to utilize computers. Until recently, in fact, computer usage was restricted primarily to processors, fish brokers and dealers. The manual Computers in Seafood Businesses illustrates how computers can be used not only for mandatory data reporting, but also for everyday decisions. The manual is designed to help those who have no experience with computers overcome their reluctance to use them. As the manual points out, much equipment operated by boat captains is far more sophisticated than a personal computer. In face, many onboard electronics are actually computers dedicated to performing certain tasks. The manual provides an introduction to using computers and specific applications programs for the seafood industry. Four basic areas are covered: computer and operating system basics; work processing; spreadsheets; and relational database systems. Specific programs or examples discussed in the manual include preparing correspondence, creating a daily log, vessel settlement and financial summary routines, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) flow chart, and a mandatory reporting log.
