Description:"There are in the US approximately 300 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), not to be confused with "marine reserves," which are just one type of MPA. Categories of MPAs range from strictly protected wilderness areas to multiple-use areas, all of which can be used as tools in fisheries and resource management, education, and research. In general, federal MPAs fall into five types: marine sanctuaries, national seashores, wildlife refuges, National Estuarine Research Reserves, and National Estuary Programs. This report provides the general public with basic information about MPAs in the Gulf of Mexico. Over 100 federal and state MPAs are cited, each with the following information: authorizing legislation, managing agency, management goals, site description, regulations, and primary information source. The authors also provide an overview of the legislative Acts and management agencies that regulate MPAs, and an introduction to marine protection in each of the Gulf states"--National Sea Grant Library publication website.
