Description:The purpose of this report is to describe and demonstrate the application of Pattern Search, a direct search optimization technique, to mathematical modeling. Pattern Search is explained in three ways: geometrically, verbally, and mathematically". Examples are given to demonstrate the uses of this technique. Input/output data are provided that may be used to check the accuracy of a duplication of the computer program. (Appendix B). It is shown that Pattern Search is a powerful technique for the objective determination of optimal values for model coefficients. The technique is applied to a Watershed Model.
