Description:

Severe local storm warnings are often released to the public based on radar echo characteristics. An attempt is made to verify these warnings with information contained in the manually-digitized radar reports and severe local storm climatology data. Results of the verification indicate that in the spring months there is some skill demonstrated in these warnings especially in areas close to radar sites. This skill decreases noticeably in the summer months and in areas more remote from radar sites.
