Description:"Various approximations have been used in numerical weather prediction models to allow the maximum useful time step, with economy being the guiding force. Among the approximations used are: the hydrostatic approximation--removing acoustic waves, the quasi-geostrophic approximation--removing gravity waves, and semi-implicit time differencing-- slowing down the phase speeds of gravity waves. In all cases it has been argued that the motions that were removed or whose accuracy was affected, were not essential to the meteorologically important fields"--Introduction.
