Description:A survey of the submerged steamboat Black Cloud was conducted by the students and staff of the nautical archeology program at Texas A&M University in response to efforts and suggestions by historians and citizens of Liberty, Texas. The side-wheel steamboat, which had been abandoned in 1873 in the Trinity River, Texas, was rediscovered in 1965. The purpose of the survey was to give students field experience in locating and defining the limits of wreckage and plotting their findings on a map. This report contains a historical review of the Black Cloud, descriptions and drawings of hull remains, and a reconstruction of the paddlewheel from artifact fragments. Also included is a catalog of artifacts recovered from the site, an analysis of their condition and conservation measures taken, and recommendations for further study.
