Description:At the National Meteorological Center an effort is underway to blend and assimilate reconnaissance and satellite data into an axial-symmetric hurricane model (used for 3-D model initialization). The method consists of the assignment of a target rotational wind field for use in a dynamic-initialization step. The assignment uses limited real data and a statistical history of the model's response to forcing, and is patterned after optimum interpolation. Cross-covariance fields of model solutions are used as influence functions, for data-quality control, and for specification of minimum data requirements.
