Description:The NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis provides information not only on the state of the atmosphere for the 1958 to 1997, but also on the state of the observing system. One step in performing the Reanalysis is to quality control the radiosonde heights and temperatures, using the Complex Quality Control for Heights and Temperatures (CQCHT) program. CQCHT reads all the upper-air data, determine which data are in error, and makes corrections to "rough" errors associated with hydrostatic inconsistencies. Information is gathered on the stations reporting and on all errors detected. This information is customarily processed at one month intervals. This note describes the results obtained from those monthly summaries. This note is divided into two main sections. The first describes the major changes to the number of radiosonde reports available through the 40-year period. The second describes the nature of the errors detected. In some cases there was a change at NCEP that led to an increase in errors for all regions; in other cases, the errors were isolated to a single geographical region. In only a limited number of cases is the reason for a change in the number of errors known. The reader of this note may be able to provide additional reasons.
