Description:"The Great 1906 Earthquake, the Northern San Andreas Fault (NSAF) ruptured nearly 400 km from the Mendocino Triple Junction to San Juan Bautista, just offshore of San Francisco. The offshore fault has never been mapped or explored. Active fluid and gas venting in concert with the topographic complexity associated with faults also produce productive, unique and unexplored ecosystems, and evidence shows that fast moving active systems create and recreate these systems through continuous change as they evolve through many earthquake and tectonic cycles. This multidisciplinary exploration will help understand how tectonic history relates to biodiversity hotspots and predict the response these biologically active areas are to disturbances such as future earthquakes. The expedition principals propose to use cutting-edge technology and an innovative vessel to explore the past and predict the future of this unexplored geobiologic system"--Expedition summary
