Description:The ringed seal (Pusa hispida) is a small pagophillic (“ice loving”) arctic phocid. It is an abundant and circumpolar species that plays a central role in arctic marine ecosystems, with life history patterns that are strongly influenced by seasonal patterns of sea ice and snow cover (Burns, 1970; McLaren, 1958; Smith, 1987).
