Completed in 1957, The Dalles Dam\nis equipped with 22 turbine units, an ice and trash sluiceway,\n20 spillbays, and a navigation lock (Fig. 1). . Unlike most other\nhydroelectric projects on the Columbia River, the powerhouse at\nThe Dalles Dam is oriented parallel to the river flow.\nThe COE has proposed a juvenile fish bypass system for The\nDalles Dam similar to those in use at other COE Columbia and\nSnake River projects. In 1985 and 1986, the National Marine\nFisheries Service (NMFS) conducted research at The Dalles Dam to\ndetermine the potential fish guidance efficiency (FGE) for\nyearling chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), sockeye\nsalmon (O. nerka), and steelhead (O. mykiss) attainable with\nstandard-length submersible traveling screens (STS) (Monk et al.\n1986, 1987) . Additionally, the vertical distribution of fish\nentering the turbine intake was measured to determine theoretical\nfish guidance efficiency (TFGE, an estimate of the percentage of\nfish theoretically guidable based upon hydraulic model studies\nand the vertical distribution of fish)\nIn 1985, the FGE of STSs at The Dalles Dam ranged from 44 to\n55% for yearling chinook salmon, from 73 to 79% for steelhead,\nand from 8 to 14% (highest FGE obtained when the STS was lowered\n0.8 m) for subyearling chinook salmon. In 1986,\nlowering the STS again appeared to enhance FGE compared to an STS\nat standard elevation (56 vs. 44% for yearling chinook salmon).\nAlthough FGE for all species was nearly 90% of the TFGE expected\nwith STSs, FGE was still well below a target level of 70%. These\ndata and the encouraging results from tests with extended-length\nscreens at McNary Dam in 1991 and 1992 (Brege et al. 1992,\nMcComas et al. 1993) suggested that FGE at The Dalles Dam might\nbe improved with longer screens.\nResearch goals at The Dalles Dam in 1993 were 1) to evaluate\nthe FGE of a prototype extended-length submersible bar screen and\nextended-length submersible traveling screen, and 2) to evaluate\nthe effects of these extended-length screens and other system\ncomponents on fish condition. Fish guidance efficiency values\nobtained with extended-length screens and effects on fish\ncondition were compared to concurrently obtained values with an\nSTS. Gatewell dipnet catches\nprovided estimates of the number of guided fish (Swan et al.\n1979) ; fyke-net catches provided estimates of the number of\nunguided fish (Fig. 2). Fish guidance efficiency for each\nspecies was calculated as gatewell catch (guided fish) divided by\nthe total number of fish (guided plus unguided), by species,\npassing through the turbine intake during the test period:\nGW\nFGE =\nX 100%\nGW+FN\nGW = gatewell catch\nFN = fyke-net catch\nGuided fish were confined to the bulkhead slot by a modified\nbalanced flow vertical barrier screen (VBS) that separated the\nbulkhead slot from the gate slot (Fig. 2). Total numbers of\nfish collected were monitored by dipnetting the gatewells during\nthe test.\nPast FGE studies have utilized fyke nets attached to a frame\nbeneath the STS to collect unguided fish. With the extended-\nlength screens this is not possible since the screen framework\nfills the entire bulkhead slot from floor to ceiling of the\nturbine intake (Fig. 2) Therefore, a frame with fyke nets to\ncollect unguided fish was installed in the downstream gate slot.\nFor 1993, redesigned fyke-net frames, more streamlined than older\nstyles, were used to reduce the effect of the frame on flow\nthrough the test unit. Newly designed fyke nets were also used\nto minimize the water resistance and increase flow through the\nnet.\nWith the extended-length screens and the STS, fyke nets were\narranged in three columns (designated left, center, right, as\nviewed from the downstream side) and seven levels (numbered from\ntop to bottom) (Fig. 2) However, cod ends were not used on the\noutside columns of the STS fyke-net frame to reduce the number of\nfish sacrificed during tests. This arrangement was based on\nprevious data for STS fyke nets which indicated nearly equal\ncatches in the left, center, and right columns (Gessel et al.","8\n1986, Brege et al. 1987) Because the proportion of total fyke-\nnet catch for each column is not as predictable with extended-\nlength screens, cod ends were placed on all 21 fyke nets used in\nFGE tests with these screens. An analysis of fyke-net catch by\nnet column with extended-length screens at McNary Dam is included\nin McComas et al. (in prep.).\nFish guidance efficiency tests with an extended-length\ntraveling screen, extended-length bar screen, and STS were\nconducted simultaneously in the center slots of Units 4, 5, and 6\nduring the spring and summer outmigration. During spring tests,\nconsiderably more fish were collected in Unit 4 than in Unit 6.\nTherefore, the STSs in Unit 4 were switched with the extended-\nlength traveling screens in Unit 6 before the start of the summer\noutmigration to increase the number of fish collected in the unit\nwith the extended-length screens (Table 2)\nDifferences in FGE among the STS, extended-length bar\nscreen, and extended-length traveling screen in Units 4-6,\nrespectively, for both yearling chinook salmon and steelhead were\nexamined using analysis of variance followed by a Fisher's\nProtected Least Significant Difference (FPLSD) multiple\ncomparison procedure (Petersen 1985). Statistical significance\nwas established for a = 0.05. Test days on which less than 30\nfish of the target species were caught were not used in the\nanalyses. A day was considered a block. Significance was\nestablished for a = 0.05.\nResults and Discussion\nYearling Fish\nTesting for FGE began on 6 May and the target number of 20\nreplicates was achieved on 27 May. Spill was curtailed until\n2200 h for the first six tests. The remaining tests were\nconducted with high spill volumes due to the high flows in the\nColumbia River during the test period. The high spill volumes\nduring the tests resulted in the collection of less than the\ndesired numbers of fish. Yearling chinook salmon numbers during\nthe period of spill curtailment ranged from 43 to 415 (mean 140) .\nDuring the spill period, fish numbers ranged from 2 to 152 (mean\n41) despite an increase in the duration of individual tests.\nAnalyses of yearling chinook salmon tests included 15, 14,\nand 13 replicates for the extended-length traveling screen,\nextended-length bar screen, and STS, respectively. The\nsteelhead, coho salmon (O. kisutch), and sockeye salmon analyses\nare based on a range of two to seven replicates. The results of\nall FGE tests are summarized in Appendix Table 1.\nFor yearling chinook salmon, mean FGE was significantly\nhigher for the extended-length bar screen (73%) than for the","11\nextended-length traveling screen (60%) and both were\nsignificantly higher than the STS (44%) (F = 32.3, P < 0.0001;\nFPLSD = 7%) Figure 3 shows daily fluctuations in FGE for\nyearling chinook salmon. For steelhead, mean FGE was\nsignificantly higher for the extended-length bar screen (83%)\nthan for the extended-length traveling screen (67%) and the STS\n(62%) (F = 11.4, P = 0.001; FPLSD = 10%) . Fish numbers for other\nsalmonid species were too low for statistical comparisons;\nhowever, mean FGE for coho salmon was 93, 95, and 75%, and for\nsockeye salmon 53, 37, and 17% for the extended-length bar\nscreen, extended-length traveling screen, and STS, respectively.\nNet-level catches are shown in Figure 4. With extended-\nlength screens, the highest fyke-net catches were in Net Levels 5\nand 6, while with the STS, the highest catch was in Net Level 4.\nNet catches were not evenly distributed among the three\nfyke-net columns with both extended-length screens. Net catches\nfor the left, center, and right columns were 42, 28, and 30%, and\n35, 33, and 32% for the extended-length bar screen and extended-\nlength traveling screen, respectively. Other juvenile salmonid species were\ncaptured, but not in sufficient numbers for statistical analysis\n(Appendix Table 1) .\nSpill during the summer FGE tests was less than 2 kcfs\n(compared to an average spill of 108 kcfs during spring FGE\ntests) This discharge, through Spillbay 1, was for attraction\ninto the spillway entrance of the adult collection system.\nNumbers of fish collected during the 20 FGE tests with\nsubyearling chinook salmon were much higher (range 32 to 631,\nmean 263) than those collected during the spring tests.\nMean FGE for subyearling chinook salmon was significantly\nhigher for the extended-length bar screen (59%) than for the\nextended-length traveling screen (51%), and the FGE for both\nextended-length screens was significantly higher than for the STS\n(23%) (F = 301.7, P < 0.0001; FPLSD = 3%) Figure 5 shows the\ndaily fluctuations in FGE for subyearling chinook salmon.\nNet-level catches are shown in Figure 6. As during the\nspring season, the highest fyke-net catches with extended-length\nscreens were in Net Levels 5 and 6, while with the STS the\nhighest fyke-net catch was in Net Level 4.\nNet catch was not evenly distributed among the three net\ncolumns for either of the extended-length screens. Net catches\nfor the left, center, and right columns were 41, 30, and 29%, and\n36, 36, and 28% for extended-length bar screen and extended-\nlength traveling screen, respectively. The\nunits were then started and run for several hours or until a\nsufficient number of fish had been collected. The units were\nthen shut down and the accumulated fish dipnetted out,\nanesthetized, and examined.\nPersonnel from the COE's Waterways Experiment Station\nmonitored the possible impingement of juvenile salmonids on the\nextended-length screens using a video camera technique previously\nused during the 1992 FGE testing at McNary Dam (McComas et al.\n1993) Screens were also examined for impinged fish when they","18\nwere raised for maintenance or during camera equipment\nadjustments.\nStatistical comparisons for fish condition were made with\nmethods and parameter values similar to those used for FGE\nanalyses.\nResults and Discussion\nYearling Fish\nResults of initial descaling tests (Test Series 1, Table 1)\nindicated that descaling with the extended-length screens, used\nin combination with selected perforated plate porosities, was\nsimilar to descaling with the STS (control). Yearling chinook\nsalmon descaling with the extended-length bar screen (50%\nporosity), the extended-length traveling screen (54% porosity) ,\nand the STS (48% porosity) was 4.8, 4.9, and 4.5%, respectively\n(Table 3) .\nDuring FGE tests, mean descaling (Test Series 2, Table 1)\nfor yearling chinook salmon was 4.8, 5.1, and 6.1%, and for\nsteelhead 6.0, 3.4, and 5.3% for the extended-length bar screen,\nextended-length traveling screen, and STS, respectively. Daily\nfluctuations in yearling chinook salmon descaling are shown in\nFigure 7. There were no statistically significant differences\namong the extended-length bar screen, extended-length traveling\nscreen, and the control condition (STS) for either yearling\nchinook salmon or steelhead.
