Menhaden Fisheries/Atlantic Coast (New England)
Description:Film was probably shot in late 1940s or early 1950s (1950?) by the fishing industry at the New England Coast with lots of classic scenes when the crew retrieved the seine by hand. More menhaden are caught off the Atlantic and Gulf coasts than any other fish anywhere in the United States, yet they are little known because, oily and bony, they are seldom used as food in unprocessed form. Processing separates solids from liquids, and oil from fish solubles ; the solids are dried and ground into fish meal. Over 200 uses for menhaden by-products have been discovered so far, in products such as fertilizer, chicken feed, paints, and coatings. No spoken word, only the background music (not identified).
