Description:The existence of hanging dams in rivers with an ice cover has been known to hydraulic engineers for many years. The presence of hanging dams in a river constricts the flow cross section and, in many cases, could cause large head losses in addition to the loss caused by a normal sheet ice cover. A number of field studies have been reported in the literature (5,6,8,9,13,26) on the formation and characteristics of hanging dams. In this report, a field study on the hydraulic characteristics of a hanging dam located in the St. Lawrence River near Sparrowhawk Point during the winter of l981-82 is presented.
