Description:Marine debris can degrade ocean habitats, endanger marine and coastal wildlife, interfere with navigation, result in economic losses, and threaten human health and safety. Sources of marine debris are wide ranging. Marine debris can originate from ocean-based sources, such as a ship that loses its cargo, and land-based sources, such as material that runs off of the landscape into rivers and oceans. The nature, type, and impacts, however, are similar regardless of where the debris originates. Research indicates a broad range of ecological, human health and safety, and economic impacts.
