Foreword

The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), a unit of the U.S. Department of Commerce/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is one of several data centers that collectively represent the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service. Operating as both a "National" and a "World" Data Center, NGDC holds data that are truly global in nature and that cover both terrestrial and marine environments. Contributors to NGDC data files include many U.S. Government agencies, universities, and foreign organizations.

This catalog summarizes geophysical and geological data available for the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA). Although the geographical scope of the data in this catalog is limited, similar data bases for other areas of interest to the exploration community also are archived by NGDC. Data holdings include those from the disciplines of seismics (reflection and refraction), gravity, magnetics, topography, well logs, geothermics, and earthquake seismology. NGDC encourages private industry initiatives in the use of these data, and welcomes cooperative projects with governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities.

Preface

The National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA) is located in the primitive wilderness of Alaska's North Slope. It was established in February 1923 by President Warren Harding, who recognized that the country needed a potential domestic source of oil in the event of a national emergency or crisis. Originally called the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4, the area was set aside for geological and geophysical exploration after early field parties reported oil seeping through the ground in several spots along Alaska's northern coast. The Reserve covers about 24 million acres, an area about the size of Indiana.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began geological surveying in this area in the early 1900's. In 1945, the U.S. Navy began surveying and drilling to appraise the petroleum potential of the Reserve. Although their drilling efforts revealed several oil and gas fields that held small reserves by Alaskan standards, only the gas field at Barrow was developed at first.

In June 1977, transfer of jurisdiction of the Reserve to the USGS from the U.S. Navy Department charged the USGS with the responsibility for: 1) exploring the area for oil and compiling a data base for assessing the Reserve's petroleum potential; 2) supplying natural gas to the residents of Barrow and to local Government facilities; and 3) restoring areas disturbed during construction and petroleum exploration activities to an environmentally acceptable condition.

Protection of the sensitive Arctic vegetation and animal habitats has been a major consideration during construction and oil exploration within the Reserve. To minimize danger to plants and wildlife resources and to limit degradation to ice-rich soils, aircraft were used extensively for bringing in supplies and equipment and for removing refuse; and track or similar-type vehicles were used for overland transport. Because the danger to wildlife probably is greatest during the seasons when the waterfowl, the polar bear, the caribou, and other animals give birth to their young, great care was taken at that time of the year to protect wildlife and to preserve their habitat.

Because of the public need for the geological and geophysical data generated in the NPRA, a repository and dissemination point for NPRA data became necessary. As a result, an interagency management agreement between USGS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) named the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) of NOAA as the national data depository in December 1977. NGDC announced the availability of the first NPRA data sets soon after--in May 1978. Since mid-1978, NGDC has provided to the public over three-dozen sets of scientific data, ranging from common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection and well log data to gravity, aerial gamma ray, and magnetic survey profiles.

In December 1980, the U.S. Congress opened the NPRA to commercial oil and gas leasing for the first time. Ensuing activity by the industry has given the raw and processed data produced from studies in the Reserve an important role in the future of energy resources in the United States.

The purpose of this compilation is to provide a record of resources available for those involved in the development of Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve.
Mention of specific commercial products or services does not imply endorsement by NOAA or the Department of Commerce.

Introduction

This catalog describes all geological and geophysical data available from NGDC for the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA) through January 1982.1 The catalog includes:
(1) common depth point (CDP) seismic reflection data and documentation covering about 13,000 line miles for 1972-81;
(2) well logs and associated information for over 40 wells, 1946-81; these data deal primarily with NPRA exploration and development since the end of the NPR-4 (formerly PET-4) program and drilling of the South Barrow No. 5 well in 1955;
(3) free-air and Bouguer gravity data, 1974-80;
(4) aerial gamma ray and magnetic profiles, 1977; and
(5) geological and geophysical data reports.

The descriptions of data sets include: data set name and number, survey date and size, fold or multiplicity, seismic source, description and format of data provided, and optional data. Prices for each item are given in the Price List enclosed separately.

Item-Numbering System

Items in this catalog have been assigned a number code to facilitate order handling and to provide a method for tracking requests. The first two letters in the Item Number (e.g., TGR-0010-MT) signify Terrestrial Geophysics; they are present in each number in this catalog. The third letter identifies the discipline code (i.e., R represents land gravity). The codes used for data-file identification are:

O = magnetics
P = topography
R = land gravity
X = seismic reflection
Y = well logs
Z = geologic data reports (or other documentation)

The four-digit number code has significance only for NGDC; however, the last two letters represent the format medium of the data item.

MT = magnetic tape2
BL = blackline paper
SE = sepia paper
PL = sepia plastic
MF = microfilm
PA = paper

1Information on surveys prior to 1955 may be obtained from the Branch of Alaskan Geology, Alaska Technical Data Unit, Mail Stop 48, U.S. Geological Survey, 345 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park, CA 94025.

2The standard magnetic tape format for digital data sets is 9-track (1/2-inch magnetic tape) 1600 BPI; however, for an additional fee, other formats will be supplied on request.
Seismic Data

Most of the CDP survey lines may be purchased as plastic, sepia, blackline or microfilm copies of the processed sections, velocity profiles and shot-point maps, or as demultiplexed digital tapes (in SEG-Y format). Full-scale 5 in./sec) sections are available for most of the lines, which were shot at either 6-, 12-, or 24-fold multiplicity.

Well Data

Analog well logs are available on plastic, sepia, blackline, folded blackline, or microfilm copies. In addition, digital well logs on computer tapes (formats include Schlumberger LISLOG, DRESSER, and DATOUT) are also available. Seismic velocity data, synthetic seismograms, and species distribution charts for many of the wells may be purchased as plastic, sepia, blackline, folded blackline, or microfilm copies. Well core analyses are available mainly as paper copies.

Gravity Data

Free-air and Bouguer gravity data for more than 53,000 gravity stations may be obtained on magnetic tape or microfilm. The data were acquired in the NPRA area along with the seismic reflection surveys. A 36-page report documents these tapes.

Aerial Gamma Ray and Magnetic Survey Data

Radiometric and magnetic data are available as profiles on microfilm or as digital records on magnetic tape. Aerial data were recorded at 1-second intervals from a helicopter about 800 feet above the terrain.

Geological and Geophysical Reports

These reports generally describe the surveys and give results and interpretations. Most of the index maps, shot-point location maps, structure maps, seismic sections, and other illustrations in these reports are available as blackline and sepia copies (both paper and plastic).

Data Set No.: TGX-0061
    Survey Date: 1972-81
    Coverage: NPRA region
Data Provided:

    Item No.
    TGX-0061-MT Processed field data on magnetic tape (SEG-Y format).
                    Order by year, line number, and shot-point interval
                    (about 1,000 tapes).

Ordering Information: For assistance in ordering seismic tapes, call (303) 497-6120 (FTS 320-6120). Cost estimates will be furnished on request. Orders for more than 10 lines should be detailed in writing.

Note: Processed seismic data types prior to 1975 are not generally available. Data for 1975-80 are in a variety of stages of processing (e.g. out-out stacked, final stack), and have poor supporting documentation. Availability of these data are spotty. The 1981 processed field data (out-out stack) are readily available.
