METEOROLOGICAL SATELLITES

The first meteorological satellite was launched on 1 April 1960. Present operational satellites are divided into two groups: those in near-polar orbits which include the NOAA series of the U.S. and the METEOR-2 series of the U.S.S.R. and, those in geostationary orbits over the equator which include the U.S. GOES, the GMS series of Japan, the Indian National Satellite and the European METEOSAT series.

From their vantage points in space, meteorological satellites measure a wide variety of environmental parameters while providing a comprehensive view of the earth. In addition to direct observations, these satellites are capable of accomplishing data-collection and data-dissemination missions.

This brief bibliography is intended to provide a selected guide to recent literature on meteorological satellites together with a small number of older items contained in the extensive collections of the NOAA Central Library.

Current references were selected from Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts, published by the American Meteorological Society, Boston, MA; Aerospace Abstracts by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, NY; and from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) database, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Springfield, VA.
