Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposure has demonstrated chronic and sublethal effects on biota. Ongoing efforts aim to reduce and, ideally, eliminate PFAS use in AFFF products. However, there is little known about the potential toxic effects of the new PFAS-free AFFFs, specifically on benthic organisms. The objective of this study is to quantify the effects of seven AFFFs on growth in the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, over a 21-day exposure period with juvenile animals. Additionally, AFFF effects are reported from algal toxicity assays and a feeding study. Five of the PFAS-free AFFFs negatively impacted growth over the exposure period, while one PFAS-free AFFF and the reference PFAS-containing AFFF had no observable effect. Median effect concentrations (EC50) for shell growth ranged from 5.81 mg/L to >100 mg/L. Clam dry and wet weights also decreased with increasing exposure concentration (p < 0.05). Algal growth was impacted over a 96-hr exposure. Impacts were observed to final standing biomass and overall growth rates at the highest exposure concentrations. However, complete lethality was only observed for one PFAS-free product, suggesting lack of food availability was likely not the primary driver of growth inhibition for all products. Net particle clearance rates in AFFF-exposed clams were not found to be impacted, suggesting there was no obvious AFFF influence on organismal feeding ability. The presented results identify chronic effects of exposure to these AFFFs in this economically and ecologically important bivalve species and are expected to inform decisions regarding PFAS replacement AFFF products. We used genetic barcoding to identify fish eggs collected across the West Florida Shelf (WFS) during September of 2013, 2014, and 2019. Fish eggs were collected on Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) ichthyoplankton cruises using a Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler. Analysis of 4833 fish eggs from the 3 years resulted in the identification of 82 species within 35 families. A 78% DNA barcoding success rate was achieved, with 46% of all identifications being at the species level. PERMANOVA results revealed significant differences in fish egg beta-diversity across time (the 3 years sampled) and space (preassigned levels of both depth class and regional strata). Our findings generally aligned with known adult fish distributions and spawning patterns, and we found that water-column depth played a more important role than regional strata in structuring the fish egg assemblages. Eggs from several economically important species were collected and observed at relatively high frequencies, including red snapper, lane snapper, vermilion snapper, yellowedge grouper, and king mackerel. We used the West Florida Coastal Ocean Model to hindcast the trajectories of all fish eggs and trace them back to possible spawning locations. We conducted backward tracking over a span of 36 h based on the assumption that most fish eggs on the WFS undergo hatching within this time window. The model estimated egg transport distances ranging from 1 to 79 km (mean distance of ~21 km), with greater transport distances estimated on the outer shelf in comparison to the middle and inner shelf. These results further our understanding of the spatial and interannual variation of fish spawning dynamics on the WFS and mark the beginning of a long-term monitoring effort. Despite advancements in computational power and growing interest in the field, underwater image analysis remains a significant challenge, especially in highly turbid environments. This study is the first to assess the potential of texture descriptors for classifying benthic species and habitats using turbid underwater imagery. Underwater images were collected in SE Baltic Sea reefs (4.4–42.2 m depth) using a drop-down camera. A total of sixteen textural descriptors were tested, of which three were selected for the CatBoost ML model image classification task. The model's performance was evaluated using annotated images provided by field experts. Among these, the MRELBP (Median Robust Extended Local Binary Pattern) algorithm achieved the highest overall performance. For individual classes, the best image classification results were achieved for large blue mussels by the LMP (Local Morphological Pattern) algorithm (F1 score: 0.72 ± 0.18) and small blue mussels (F1 score: 0.66 ± 0.13) by MRELBP. For lithological classes, sand was classified with the highest accuracy by MRELBP (F1 score: 0.69 ± 0.23). Model coverage estimates were acceptable in 49 % of the images, with blue mussels being the most suitable for evaluation. The results demonstrate textural descriptors capabilities in classifying real-world underwater images. This study presents the first successful application of the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework to marine HAB control technology development. The stakeholder engagement strategy included workshops in southwest Florida with pre- and post-surveys to assess understanding and comfort, plus feedback sessions to gather actionable input for ongoing R&D. The RRI approach achieved measurable success across all objectives: survey results showed significant increases in stakeholder understanding (from "fair" to "very good") and comfort with DinoSHIELD, with 97 % of participants increasing understanding and 85 % increasing comfort. Stakeholder feedback directly informed critical R&D priorities including alternative deployment mechanisms, sustainability considerations, and ecological safety assessments, demonstrating successful framework responsiveness. Participants showed enthusiasm for the technology's natural derivation while identifying crucial research gaps that have been incorporated into ongoing development. This work establishes the first rigorous baseline of stakeholder perceptions for marine HAB control technologies and validates a replicable model for environmental management strategies. The results demonstrate that successful technology transition requires meaningful stakeholder participation throughout development, providing a template for accelerating responsible development of novel environmental technologies. While remote sensing and artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising tools for automated debris detection, most existing datasets focus on marine environments with homogeneous backgrounds, leaving a critical gap for complex terrestrial floodplains. This study introduces the San Diego River Debris Dataset, a multi-resolution UAV imagery collection with ground reference designed to support automated detection of anthropogenic debris in urban floodplains. The dataset includes manually annotated debris objects captured under diverse environmental conditions using two UAV platforms (DJI Matrice 300 and DJI Mini 2) across spatial resolutions ranging from 0.4 to 4.4 cm. We benchmarked five deep learning architectures (RetinaNet, SSD, Faster R-CNN, DetReg, Cascade R-CNN) to assess detection accuracy across varying image resolutions and environmental settings. Cascade R-CNN achieved the highest accuracy (0.93) at 0.4 cm resolution, with accuracy declining rapidly at resolutions above 1 cm and 3.3 cm. Spatial analysis revealed that 51% of debris was concentrated within unsheltered encampments, which occupied only 2.6% of the study area. Validation confirmed a strong correlation between predicted debris extent and field measurements, supporting the dataset’s operational reliability. This openly available dataset fills a gap in environmental monitoring resources and provides guides for future research and deployment of UAV-based debris detection systems in urban floodplain areas. In 2017, an unprecedented event of two Category 5 hurricanes in rapid succession occurred on St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Short-term monitoring (2.5 months after the hurricanes) enabled us to characterize the impacts of these extreme events on coral reef sponge communities. In addition, to understand how coral reefs recover after disturbance, we evaluated changes in the sponge communities from pre-hurricane surveys in 2016 to two years post-storms in 2019. We identified 148 distinct sponge taxa within permanent transects at six sites around St. Thomas. Sponge communities varied across sites pre-storms, and exhibited different degrees of resilience. By two years post-storms, sponge cover did not return. Sponge volume increased overall, but was highly variable among sites. However, after two years, sponge densities increased by 42.3% over pre-storm densities, indicating the occurrence of sponge recruitment and fragmentation/reattachment. Sponge community richness increased at all sites over time, with an influx of rare species. Overall, succession of sponge communities was gradual and variable across sites and points to post-hurricane recovery requiring longer than two years. Although none of the sites returned to their pre-storm assemblages, recovery was greater at some sites at two years post-storms. Our data suggest that sponge recovery may occur on USVI reefs, but requires a longer timeframe and an absence of subsequent disturbances. Understanding community dynamics and the demographic mechanisms of populations that underpin them, may provide insight into the barriers to coral recovery and the future for benthic community structure. We leveraged 20 years of data to test for spatiotemporal variation in benthic community structure and region-wide demographic changes in four stony coral and three octocoral species. From 2003 to 2023, multiple acute disturbances induced significant reconfigurations of benthic community structure, most notably repeated coral loss and macroalgal gains. Interspecific differences in demography suggest variability in resilience, which facilitates the presence of ecological winners and losers. Siderastrea siderea (stony coral) and Antillogorgia americana (octocoral) exhibited high resilience, fueled by booms in recruit density. However, S. siderea size frequency distributions (SFDs) were heavily skewed with few large colonies, suggesting limited growth and survival. Porites astreoides (stony coral) and Gorgonia ventalina (octocoral) populations grew steadily from 2013 to 2023, facilitated by consistent recruitment and growth, which was reflected in lognormal SFDs, indicative of transition between size classes. The reef-building stony corals Meandrina meandrites and Montastraea cavernosa emerged as ecological losers due to substantial mortality from heat stress and disease and limited recovery. Due to the restricted size (S. siderea and P. astreoides) or planar morphologies (A. americana, Eunicea flexuosa (octocoral), G. ventalina) of the winners, they contribute little to benthic cover. As a result, benthic community structure is becoming increasingly homogenous, with much of the remaining spatial variation dependent upon whether a site has more sediment/turf algae or macroalgae/cyanobacteria, which combined constitute over 80% of the benthic cover and further reduce stony coral recovery potential. Underwater video was recorded on two cage farms and a rock reef during May–September 2018 to quantify fish behavioural interactions and to assess ecological services provided by aquaculture gear, relative to natural structured seafloor. To collect video, action cameras were mounted on four study cages at a high-density farm of 40–100 commercial cages (dense farm), on four single cages interspersed on low relief seafloor (sparse farm) and adjacent to four boulders on a rock reef (rock reef), within an embayment off Milford, Connecticut in Long Island Sound (NW Atlantic). Video was recorded hourly in 8-min segments from 7 AM to 7 PM. Behaviours associated with habitat provisioning (e.g., courtship/reproduction, escape from predators, foraging, sheltering, schooling/grouping, territoriality) were observed for all three fish species on cages and boulders. Foraging and sheltering activity in cunner was significantly higher on cages than boulders while territorial behaviour occurred more frequently on boulders. Instances of escape from predators, foraging and sheltering behaviours in scup and tautog were significantly higher on cages than on boulders. Courtship/reproduction, grouping and territoriality were also higher on cages than boulders in tautog. Our results suggest that oyster cages confer ecological services that fulfil the basic biological and functional requirements of reef-oriented fish, and provide habitat attributes afforded by natural rock reefs. In this study, we show a 0.5–1°C cooling of the surface layer, recorded on the day of closest approach (DCA) of the glider to Hurricane Sally. We also found that freshwater from river discharge created an upper ocean barrier layer, which reduced the cooling of surface (or mixed) layer temperature by 38.6%. The high barrier layer potential energy (BLPE) together with the high buoyancy frequency squared (N2), prior to 15 September, indicated a very stable water column. Further analysis shows the interaction between SG601, Hurricane Sally, and a warm core Loop Current (LC) eddy in the northern GoM. Findings presented in this study also show that ocean models do not effectively simulate river discharge (plume) in the northern GoM.
